Lafayette Cemetery #1 Projects

Over the past several years, the GDA  has taken aim to beautify the area surrounding Lafayette Cemetery #1.  Situated in the middle of the neighborhood, across from Commanders Palace and the Rink, the Washington Avenue entrance to the cemetery  attracts many tourists and residents. In 2016  the GDA set out to enhance this block by expanding the landscaping to allow better growth of the beautiful oak tree canopy, narrowing the sidewalks and adding walkways from the street to the sidewalk to assist in pedestrian traffic flow.  Since the initial enhancement, the GDA has added to the landscape the length of the sidewalk and continues to maintain the plantings.

In 2024, the 6th Street side of the cemetery begged for attention after the city re-laid the sidewalks. The GDA stepped in again to clean up the area and plant ground cover along the length of the block.  Ongoing maintenance for this block, Prytania and Washington  surrounding the cemetery are handled by the Association.
